Creating Commuter Trip Plans

Results page

Your results are in two parts, one that restates your entries and gives a table of the trip plans, and another with the details of the trip plans themselves. The first part looks like this. For details, see below.

A Convenience links

These three links make it easier to use the application:

  • Send Feedback - click to send comments to the site administrator.
  • Revise Original Entries - use this link to change some of the settings on the entry page, without having to start over and enter everything.
  • Plan New Commute - click to start over with a blank entry form.

B Summary of entries

The page shows a summary of your entries. Locations may be different from what you entered. If you chose a location from the options on the Clarify Location page, what you picked is displayed. The area (zip code or city) is shown for verification. Use Revise Original Entries if something is not correct.

C Using the PDA Download

The PDA download created by the commuter trip plan application produces a .pdb file. You must have a reader application compatible with this format on your PDA in order to view it.

To install a .pdb trip plan on your PDA:

  1. Create a commuter trip plan.
  2. Click the "PDA Download" link at the top of the results page.
  3. When prompted, rename and save the file to an appropriate location on your computer.
  4. Send the file to your handheld device using the device's vendor-provided software.
  5. Open the document in the pdb-compatible application you have installed on your PDA.

The following describes several .pdb compatible free or free-trial readers: (all are external links):

  • CspotRun
    (Palm) [external link]
  • Palm Reader [external link]
    (Palm OS, Pocket PC)
  • MobiPocket Reader [external link]
(PalmOS, Windows CE, PocketPC, SymbianOs, Franklin eBookMan and Windows)
  • μBook Reader
(Handheld PCs (Ce 2.11), Palm-Size PCs (Ce 2.11) and Pocket PCs (Ce 3.0+))

D Table of results

The table shows the set of Commuter Trip Plans generated from your request. In your browser, click on one of the times to see details. Double dashes (--) mean the Trip Planner did not find a trip for that time. This table is not included in a PDA download.

Commuter Trip Plan Details

Trip plans look like this. For details on reading them, see below.

Graphic of sample trips, see explanation below for fields

A Sample Arrival

Each arrival trip plan is identified by the time of arrival. The line also includes a link back to the table of results. Trip plan details are shown next. The details are listed in this order:

  • Walk a distance to a stop - this line may read "Board at" a stop if the stop is close to the starting location.
  • At a time, board a route - the bus route or other transit vehicle is identified by the operator (see Who's Who), the route number, and the sign on the vehicle.
  • Get off at a time at a stop - shows the arrival time at the next stop and the name of the stop
  • Walk a distance to a stop or a destination - If it's a one-vehicle trip, the walk is to the destination. If there's a transfer, the walk is to the stop where the next leg of your trip starts. This line may read "Board at" a stop or not be present if the walk is very short.
  • At a time, board a route - the next leg of your trip, if needed.
  • The boarding time and stop, route, drop-off time and stop, and walking are repeated for each leg of the trip.

NOTE: Because your Commuter Trip Plans are likely to be for a trip you take frequently, none of the specifics are linked to more detailed information. If you want more information on how to walk to the stop, the location of the stop, the fare to pay or the route timetable, you can use the regular Trip Planner functions to get them. Plan a single trip to arrive at the same time, using the same locations, and the results will include links to those details.

B Sample Departure

Each departure trip plan is identified by the time of departure. The line also includes a link back to the table of results. Trip plan details are shown next. For information on the details, see the section above about arrival trips.
